Overrated is an Understatement

I have never hated a place more than I hate Seychelles.

Here are some places I would rather go:

  • Texarkana, my previous least favorite city in the world.
  • Siberia in winter.
  • Juarez, Mexico.
  • Mogadishu, Somalia
  • On a prison visit
  • A museum dedicated to Brussels sprouts

Here’s why:

The islands that make up Seychelles are beautiful bits of paradise, there’s no denying that. They are some of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen and there are amazing animal species that cannot be found anywhere else (the HUGE Seychelles fruit bat, for example. Seychellois call it a flying fox because it’s that big).

I just..

It’s just…

How. HOW can you be a tourist destination and not have public transportation running after 6:00pm? WHY did I walk six miles round trip in the dark without seeing a single taxi between the capital and the largest tourist town on the largest island? WHYYYYY when I ask to pay for another bag at a restaurant am I told “ONE MEAL, ONE BAG”?

AND WHY DOES IT COST MORE THAN 130 UNITED STATES DOLLARS FOR A 120 MINUTE ROUND TRIP FERRY???

I paid less to fly 1,125 miles from Lusaka to Nairobi than I paid to ferry 30 miles from the main island of Mahé to a smaller island called Praslin.

Yes, the bag thing was petty but it helped solidify Seychelles as my least favorite country. It’s small things like that – mannerisms people had towards me and lack of customer service from over-priced / under-equipped guesthouses that had me questioning how anyone has a good experience.

The answer, in short: resorts and excursions. Seychelles is one of those places like Cancún or Negril, where you would book the whole package then sit back and relax. You rarely, if ever, have to interact with the locals and you definitely don’t need to use public transportation. Food and drinks of all sorts are included in your vacation so that all things are taken care of – all you’re there to do is enjoy paradise (and, if you’re one of the French families I saw – destroy nature because it’s so beautiful. They saw an awesome flower and ripped it off the stem so they could walk around with it).

I guarantee that I can name at least five other countries that would be less expensive and just as beautiful. Resorts and excursions are completely okay, it just doesn’t make sense to do that kind of trip to Seychelles.

To prospective honeymooners wishing to follow in the footsteps of Prince William and Duchess Kate.. please. I’m actually begging you to consider another destination – I’ll help you plan it and give you all the tips in the world. There are far better countries with nice people and beaches that are equally beautiful to Anse Source d’Argent (the beach on Seychelles. The one you see when you google the place).

I hope not to crush anyone’s dreams. Sorry Jessa!
